Sculpting for Begginers
Introduction

I decided to help those of you who are not as experienced at sculpting as you would have liked to be or are beggining sculpting. Now I'm no expert sculpter myself, but I know the basics. If there's any expert sculpter out there who wants to either correct what I've said in this article or who wants to make a more experienced sculpting article, then by all means go ahead.

Putties

Greenstuff
This is the kind of putty you would use for things like hair, cloaks, hands, faces and other areas that need to be quite smooth

)

Brownstuff
This is used for things like armour and weapons and is better for details. It smooths easier, dries harder and is much firmer to work with.

Milliput - standard grey
This is used for much larger objects where a stone textured finish is wanted as it smooths less.

Milliput - silver
This is much the same apart from is for more detailed work and will dry much harder than standard grey.

Tools

Sculpting tool
This has two ends, one can be used in much the same way as a crafting knife when it comes to sculpting and will engrave lines. The other end is used for things like smoothing the putty out and stretching it slightly.

Crafting knife
The crafting knife is generally for cutting but it can be used in the same way as the first end of the sculpting tool.

Armatures
An Armature is very helpful when it comes to sculpting your own miniatures. It gives you a base to work up from giving you the appropriate scale and muscle shapes.

Begginers sculpting techniques!

Now for the fun part! Very Happy

Hair
Mix up your desired amount of putty (greenstuff advised) and then roll out small bits which will then be applied to the head in your desired area. The using the flat end of the sculpting tool smooth it out. Now you can use the other end of the tool to make neat grooves to the putty and you should end up with something that looks like hair.

Chainmail
Mix up your desired amount of putty (brownstuff advised but greenstuff will do) and then apply the putty where you would like your chainmail to be. Smooth it very slightly to the edges so that you can hardly tell. Shape into your desired position and then use the sharp end of the sculpting tool or a crafting knife to add the holes where the rings would be. You should end up with some chainmail on your figure.

Armour plating
Mix up your desired amount of putty (brownstuff advised but greenstuff is fine) and then aply to the disered part of the figure. Smooth out untill you like the shape then try and gently smooth it to the figure so that you can hardly tell.

Rocks
Mix up a good amount of putty (Any type of milliput depending on how detailed and hard you would like it) and push against it with the sculpting tool, smooth it etc untill you are happy with its appearance. Check the fit on the base and wait for it to dry. Once it is dry you may attach it to your base.

Other info

If you are a begginer i would not advise trying out faces or very fine details like that untill you have mastered the basics.

I advise www.ebobminiatures.com for your tools as they are nice and cheap and they are of good qaulity - but if not then GW is fine however they do not supply brownstuff or milliput. Ebobminis also has sculpting armatures which are great when you are beggining to sculpt entire figure as you can choose your pose with them and you have a base to start your figure from.

The perfect starter set for sculpting can also be bought from EbobMiniatures for a very respectable price so if you are considering starting sculpting you should look into this set.

I hope this has helped as these are some usefull tips that have done me well in my sculpting and as i usually say... If you like this article... dont forget to vote Wink

Thanks,

Jake.
